How to remove nad prevent AC mold on wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a bit, and now I've found black speckled mold along the bottom of the wardrobe on the wall behind it. We run the AC constantly but the room still feels damp. What's the most effective way to clean this off the wood and, more importantly, how can I stop it from coming back for good?

The damp feeling and black speckled mold indicate your AC is not properly dehumidifying, a common issue in Dubai's climate. For the wood wardrobe, wipe the surface with a solution of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Never use bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the roots. Allow the area to dry completely.

The cleaning is a temporary fix; the root cause is the AC leak and inadequate moisture control. The constant running without proper dehumidification is recirculating damp air. You must first fix the AC leak—this requires a qualified HVAC technician to check the drain line, drip pan, and insulation. Once the leak is repaired, the room must be thoroughly dried. A professional-grade dehumidifier is often necessary to bring the humidity down to below 60%, which prevents mold regrowth.

For a permanent solution, address the source. The wall cavity behind the wardrobe may be contaminated, which requires invasive inspection and remediation. In many Dubai villas, this is a job for a certified mold remediation company. They can conduct proper testing to identify the mold type and extent of the problem, then perform the necessary containment, removal, and drying procedures to ensure it doesn't return. Simply cleaning the surface will not solve a deeper infestation.
