Black mold in bedroom causing cough: first step?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed these black speckles spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall where it meets the ceiling, especially behind the wardrobe. My husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy sinuses and this dry cough that just won't go away. I'm really worried it's black mold from the humidity. How dangerous is this and what's the absolute first step we should take to deal with it safely?

The black speckles in your Jumeirah villa are a serious concern, especially with your respiratory symptoms. The first step is to not disturb the area. Do not attempt to wipe, scrub, or spray it with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and significantly worsen your indoor air quality and your exposure.

Your symptoms—persistent stuffy sinuses and a dry cough—are classic indicators of a mold-related air quality issue. Given the location (a high-humidity bedroom with a wardrobe restricting airflow), this is likely condensation-related mold, which is extremely common here due to our climate.

For a situation like this, the absolute first step is a professional inspection. A certified inspector will use a moisture meter to identify the exact source of the water intrusion, which is critical. In many villas, this can be a small leak in the AC condensation line inside the wall or simply chronic condensation from the temperature difference between the cooled room and the hot ceiling space. They should also take an air sample from your bedroom and a control sample from outside for lab analysis. This is the only way to confirm the type and concentration of mold spores you're breathing, which dictates the remediation protocol.

Until the inspector arrives, try to improve ventilation in that room. Keep the bedroom door open and run an exhaust fan if you have one. This can help reduce spore concentration. For remediation, the Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for mold removal to ensure it is contained and removed safely, not just wiped away.
