Dealing with large black mold in Dubai villa myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in the master bedroom, probably from a slow AC leak. It’s spread across a good portion of the wall and the room has a damp smell. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company in Dubai, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a job this size?

For a large patch of black mold caused by an AC leak in a Dubai villa, this is not a DIY job with bleach. The high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for mold to penetrate deep into building materials, and surface scrubbing will not address the root problem.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, disturbing a large colony without proper containment and PPE can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing a significant inhalation risk.

Professional remediation is necessary here. The process involves isolating the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of affected porous materials like the damaged drywall, and using specialized biocides and HEPA scrubbing to clean the air. Crucially, they must identify and repair the source of the moisture—in this case, the AC leak—otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

The cost for a professional job is not trivial, as it is labor and equipment intensive. The final price is determined by the extent of the infestation and the required repairs. You should request a detailed, on-site assessment from a certified provider who can outline the scope of work and provide a transparent quote. Always verify a company’s certifications, such as from IICRC, and ensure their proposal includes post-remediation verification to confirm the mold has been properly addressed.
