How urgent is black mold in closet with strong smell?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black, speckled patches forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It's an interior wall, but the musty smell is really strong when you open the doors. With the humidity levels lately, I'm worried it's spreading quickly. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a bleach solution first?

This requires immediate attention. That strong musty smell indicates active microbial growth, and in Dubai's high humidity, it can spread quickly behind walls. The black, speckled pattern is a common visual indicator.

Do not use bleach. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and only bleaches the surface colour, leaving the root structure intact. It can also worsen the problem by adding moisture. For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), you may carefully clean it with a dedicated mould remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, the smell suggests the growth is more extensive inside the wall cavity, likely due to a hidden moisture source like a condensation leak from an AC pipe or rising damp.

In this case, professional assessment is strongly recommended. A proper inspection identifies the exact moisture source to prevent recurrence and determines the extent of the contamination. Remediation often involves controlled removal of affected drywall and insulation. For verification, post-remediation testing confirms the environment has been returned to a normal fungal ecology. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent it from returning.
