Mold in bedroom: urgent for my son's cough or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the back of the bedroom wardrobe, which is on an interior wall. The AC is always on, but the room still feels a bit damp. My main concern is my son who sleeps in there has developed a nagging cough that won’t go away. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company involved, or is this something I can handle myself with a vinegar solution first?

Given the damp feeling and your son's persistent cough, this warrants professional assessment rather than DIY. Visible spread on an interior wall, combined with humidity from constant AC use, points to a potential moisture issue within the wall cavity itself. A vinegar solution will only address surface mold you can see, not the hidden colony or the underlying cause.

In Dubai's climate, AC systems can create significant condensation if not properly balanced, often leading to moisture buildup inside walls, especially behind furniture. Your son's nagging cough is a common reaction to mold spores and a strong indicator that the air quality in that room is compromised.

For any visible spread exceeding a few square feet, or when health symptoms are present, professional inspection is recommended. A reputable company will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden moisture source. They can also take an air sample for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol.

While you wait for assessment, improve ventilation in the room by occasionally opening windows and moving the wardrobe slightly away from the wall. Do not attempt to scrub the mold, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. The priority is identifying and stopping the moisture source to protect your family's health.
