How to remove mold behind wardrobe without a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. I think it happened after we had that really humid spell last month and we’ve been running the AC non-stop. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without having to call in a professional company right away?

That's a classic sign of condensation-induced mold, very common here after humid spells. The wall behind furniture becomes a cold spot with no air circulation from your AC, allowing moisture to condense and mold to grow.
First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to fully expose the area and allow it to dry. For small, surface-level spots (less than a square meter), you can often handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not kill the roots, allowing it to return. Scrub the area gently, then wipe it down with a clean, dry cloth. The critical step is to identify and stop the moisture source. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or your AC's dry mode in that room to significantly lower the humidity level. To prevent recurrence, leave a few inches of space between the wardrobe and the wall to permit air flow. Consider applying an anti-mold primer paint to that wall before moving the furniture back. If the mold has penetrated the plasterboard or the affected area is large, the wall material itself may be compromised and require cutting out and replacement. A professional inspection is recommended in that case to assess the full extent and ensure it's properly remediated, as hidden mold within walls is a frequent issue in Dubai's climate. |
