effective way to remove black mold in wardrobe for good?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the back of our walk-in wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It's been really humid the past month and I think the lack of air circulation back there caused it. What's the most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I be calling a professional company or is it a DIY job?

The most effective removal depends entirely on the extent. For a small, contained area on a non-porous surface, a careful DIY approach can work. For anything larger than about one square meter, porous materials like drywall, or if occupants have health sensitivities, professional remediation is the recommended and safer course.

Start by isolating the area; seal the wardrobe and keep the room well-ventilated. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. For a surface like the wall, scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage materials. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely within 24-48 hours using dehumidifiers and fans—this is the most critical step to prevent immediate return.

However, the underlying cause is the Dubai climate. The high humidity, especially during summer and recent humid months, combined with a lack of air circulation in enclosed spaces like wardrobes, creates a perfect environment for mould. To prevent this for good, you must address the moisture. Leave the wardrobe door ajar periodically, consider a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside it for the humid season, and ensure your room's AC is servicing that area adequately to reduce ambient humidity.

Given that the mould is spreading on your walls and has likely affected stored fabrics, a professional inspection is prudent. They can assess if the mould has penetrated the wallboard itself, which would require removal and replacement. They also use industrial HEPA air scrubbers during remediation to contain spores and professional-grade dehumidifiers to achieve the rapid, thorough drying that is difficult to replicate DIY. For peace of mind and a guaranteed solution, requesting an assessment from a company that does pre- and post-remediation testing is the most definitive way to ensure it's gone for good.
