How urgently should I treat black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been so humid lately I'm worried it's spreading. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated before it affects our health or ruins our things?

Address it within the next few days. The combination of high UAE humidity and an exterior wall suggests a condensation or minor water intrusion issue is creating a persistent damp environment, allowing the mold to thrive and potentially spread.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can often manage it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted white vinegar solution. Dry the wall and your stored items thoroughly with a fan. Crucially, identify the moisture source. It is likely condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall. Improving air circulation in the closet and ensuring your AC is set to a consistent, reasonable temperature can help reduce recurrence.

If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact cause of the dampness within the wall structure, which is common here. In such cases, remediation followed by targeted dehumidification, like using a small desiccant dehumidifier in the closet, is often necessary to protect your belongings and indoor air quality long-term.
