Black mold in closet: health risks and which doctor?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a big patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from the humidity. Lately, my husband and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches that go away once we leave for work. I'm really worried this is the cause and that we've been breathing it in for who knows how long. What are the specific health risks we should be most concerned about, and should we see a general doctor here or a specialist to get checked out?

The symptoms you describe—morning headaches and congestion that resolve when you leave—are classic indicators of poor indoor air quality, and the mold is a likely contributor. The primary health concerns from prolonged exposure are chronic allergic reactions, sinusitis, and respiratory irritation. For individuals with pre-existing asthma or weakened immune systems, the risk of more significant reactions is higher.

While the term "black mold" often causes alarm, the color alone doesn't identify the species or its toxicity. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and condensation behind walls or in closed spaces like closets create an ideal environment for various molds to thrive, even with year-round AC. The first step is not to panic but to act on removing the source.

You should start with a general practitioner to address your current symptoms. Describe your environment and the mold discovery. They can treat the allergic response and determine if a referral to a specialist, like an allergist or pulmonologist, is necessary for further testing.

Concurrently, you need a professional mold inspection. A proper assessment involves identifying the moisture source and taking air and surface samples for lab analysis to determine the spore types and concentrations. This data is crucial for understanding the specific risk and for guiding the remediation process, which must address the hidden moisture to prevent recurrence. Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as improper disturbance can aerosolize the spores and worsen your exposure.
