Black mold in closet: DIY or call a pro for toddler?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It seems to have appeared since the humidity spiked last month. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I’m worried about our toddler who sleeps in the next room. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves or should we call a professional company?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai, often triggered by the high humidity and the temperature difference between the cool indoor air and the warm wall, leading to condensation. For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be effective if done carefully, especially with a toddler nearby.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can feed future mold growth while only removing surface discoloration. Instead, use a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry afterward. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In this case, improving air circulation around the closet and checking for any hidden leaks in the wall is essential.

However, given that the mold is on an exterior wall and appeared due to a humidity spike, there is a significant possibility of moisture trapped within the wall cavity that you cannot see. This hidden moisture means the mold will almost certainly return. For any mold issue that recurs after cleaning, is larger than one square foot, or is in a home with vulnerable individuals like a toddler, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the hidden source of condensation. A lab test can also confirm the mold type, which is valuable information for peace of mind regarding health risks. In many cases, the remediation itself is straightforward, but the diagnostic step is what prevents it from becoming a recurring problem.
