Can I remove recurring black mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, speckled mold spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it definitely got worse after the heavy humidity last week. I’m worried it’s the reason my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back darker. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

The recurring growth after vinegar treatment indicates a persistent moisture source that the cleaner isn't addressing. In Dubai's high humidity, this is almost always a condensation issue from an AC duct or a slow leak in the wall.

For a small patch (under 1 square foot), you can attempt remediation by scrubbing with a dedicated mold remover, but you must identify and fix the moisture source first. Check for a musty smell from the AC vent or cold spots on the wall, as these are common culprits. However, since it's recurring and linked to health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden water source that DIY methods miss.

The term "black mold" is misleading, as many species appear black. Only lab analysis can confirm if it's Stachybotrys, which produces mycotoxins and requires more stringent containment during removal. Professional remediation includes isolating the area with negative air pressure to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home, which is a critical step you cannot replicate yourself.

Given the recurrence and potential health impact, the most effective approach is to have the species identified and the root cause diagnosed. This will ensure the problem is resolved permanently, not just the visible stain cleaned.
