How to clean mold off leather from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’ve found black spots on a few of my leather handbags and shoes stored in there. It’s been so humid the last few weeks that everything feels damp. What’s the best way to clean the mold off my leather items and how can I stop the AC unit from causing this again?

First, move the affected items to a dry, well-ventilated area away from the damp closet to prevent further mold growth. For cleaning, use a soft cloth slightly dampened with a solution of equal parts distilled water and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Gently wipe the mold off the leather, never scrubbing. Allow the items to air dry completely away from direct sunlight, then treat with a leather conditioner to restore moisture.

The core issue is the AC leak and the resulting high humidity. In Dubai's climate, AC units must work constantly, leading to significant condensation. A leak indicates a blockage in the drain line, a faulty condensate pan, or poor insulation. You must have a certified HVAC technician inspect and repair the unit to stop the leak at its source.

To prevent recurrence, the closet needs its environment controlled. After the AC is repaired, use a dedicated dehumidifier or moisture absorber in that space. Ensure the closet door is left ajar periodically to allow air circulation and prevent the stagnant, humid conditions mold thrives in. For extensive mold growth on the items or within the closet structure itself, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the scope and provide remediation guidance, as improper handling can spread spores.
