Can I clean black mold myself or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall and seems to have spread a bit onto a couple of our suitcases, and the room has had a weird damp smell for a while that I'm now connecting to this. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or a vinegar solution, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here in Dubai?

It depends on the size and type of mold. For a small patch under one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself, but the root cause must be addressed. Dubai's high humidity and continuous AC use create perfect conditions for condensation in closets and behind walls, which is likely the source of your moisture.
For DIY, skip bleach as it only removes surface discoloration and can worsen indoor air quality. A distilled white vinegar solution is more effective at killing the mold. However, simply wiping the visible growth is insufficient. You must identify and fix the moisture source, which could be a small condensation leak from an AC duct in the ceiling or wall, poor ventilation, or even water ingress from outside. Given the mold is on porous materials like drywall and has spread to your belongings, and that you've noticed a persistent damp smell, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to find the hidden extent of the growth and its moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution. They can also advise on properly treating contaminated items like your suitcases. For health safety and to ensure the problem is fully resolved, an assessment is the most reliable path. |
