How to stop bathroom mold in a windowless apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My ensuite bathroom in my Jumeirah apartment has no windows, and after every shower, the steam just hangs in the air for ages. I’ve been wiping down the walls but I’ve just spotted black specks in the grout between the tiles. I run the exhaust fan, but it doesn’t seem strong enough. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from spreading for good without having to renovate the whole thing?

Bathroom mold in a windowless apartment is a direct result of trapped humidity, a common challenge in Dubai. The most effective strategy combines immediate cleaning with long-term moisture control.

First, address the existing mold. For surface mold on non-porous tile and grout, a dedicated antifungal cleaner is more effective than bleach, which only removes the colour. Apply it, let it dwell for the recommended time, then scrub and rinse. This will remove the current growth.

Preventing its return is crucial. Your exhaust fan is likely undersized. Run it for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower. Verify it's actually moving air by holding a single piece of toilet paper to the vent; if it doesn't hold, the fan may be faulty or the duct blocked. Consider upgrading to a higher-CFM model. Wipe down all wet surfaces—walls, shower glass, fittings—with a squeegee immediately after use. This simple step removes the water mold needs to grow. A portable dehumidifier can help significantly in a sealed bathroom.

For persistent black specks that reappear quickly, the mold may have penetrated deep into the grout or behind tiles. In such cases, surface cleaning is temporary. A professional inspection can identify the extent of the issue and the most targeted remediation method, which may involve specialized grout treatment or localized repair, avoiding a full renovation.
