Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or professional removal?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Downtown Dubai has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold on the wall behind the bedroom wardrobe. It’s been slowly getting bigger over the last couple of weeks since the humidity spiked. I’m worried about the health risks and the damage to the wall. For a job like this, should I just clean it myself with bleach or is it worth getting a professional mold removal company to handle it, and what would the cost likely be for a small area?

A professional assessment is strongly recommended here, as a leak from an AC unit in a Downtown Dubai apartment often means moisture has penetrated deep into the wall cavity. The visible patch is likely just the surface manifestation. Humidity here accelerates growth inside the structure, making a simple surface clean ineffective for long-term resolution.

For health and property integrity, a proper inspection identifies the moisture source and maps the full extent. DIY cleaning with bleach is a temporary fix; it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the hyphae (roots) within porous materials like drywall. In our climate, the mold will almost certainly return.

The procedure involves stopping the AC leak, drying the structure with professional equipment, removing contaminated porous materials like affected drywall or insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment. For a small, contained area, the scope of work is typically manageable, but costs depend entirely on the depth of the infestation discovered. You should request an on-site assessment to get an accurate scope and quotation for the remediation work.
