Should I worry about black speckles in my closet??« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black speckles forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. I'm worried it might be spreading behind the clothes, especially with the humidity lately. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can it wait a few weeks until our schedule clears up?

Those black speckles in your closet are likely mould, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially on interior walls where condensation can form. You should address it soon, but it may not require an emergency call-out if the area is small and confined.

For a patch smaller than a square foot, you can often manage it yourself. Start by moving the clothes away to allow air circulation. Wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar or a mild detergent solution and ensure it is thoroughly dried. Use a dehumidifier or a fan in the room to keep humidity levels low, as our constant AC use can create cold surfaces where moisture condenses.

If the speckles return quickly, are spreading, or you notice a musty smell, it suggests a deeper issue that a professional should assess. They can identify if there's a hidden leak in the plumbing or AC drainage or if moisture is wicking through the wall. Certified mould inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the water source, which is the only way to prevent recurrence. In many cases, simply wiping visible mould without addressing the underlying moisture is a temporary fix.

Given your location, the high humidity can cause mould to proliferate rapidly. If you have any family members with allergies or respiratory sensitivities, it's advisable to get a professional assessment sooner rather than later.
