Could black mold in our wardrobe be making us sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and complaining of headaches for the past month, and I just found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading on the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which always feels damp. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm starting to panic that it's the cause. Is this black mold and could it really be making my family this sick?

Black mold is a common but imprecise term for several species, some of which can produce mycotoxins that cause health effects. The symptoms you describe—persistent coughing and headaches—are strongly associated with exposure to damp indoor environments and the mold they foster.

Given the high humidity in Dubai, condensation behind furniture is a frequent issue, especially in older buildings where insulation may be less effective. The dampness you feel is the primary catalyst for mold growth. For vulnerable individuals like children, or those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, this exposure can trigger and sustain these allergic and irritant symptoms.

While visual identification is not definitive, the circumstances you've described—a consistently damp area with black, fuzzy growth coinciding with the onset of family illness—strongly suggest it is a contributing factor. You should arrange for a professional inspection. A certified inspector can take samples for lab analysis to confirm the species, as this determines the actual risk level and the required remediation protocol. In the interim, avoid disturbing the area and improve ventilation in the room. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and a proper assessment will determine if the situation meets thresholds requiring professional remediation.
