AC mold in closet: emergency or DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a little bit into the closet for maybe two weeks. I wiped up the water but didn't think much of it until I just pulled out a leather jacket and the whole shoulder is covered in fuzzy black spots. My wife says we need to call someone immediately, but is this something I can handle myself over the weekend, or is it a genuine emergency for a professional?

This is a professional-level situation, not a DIY fix. The fuzzy black spots indicate active growth, which means the leak created a perfect breeding ground inside your wall or under the flooring. The high humidity in Dubai provides a constant source of moisture for mould to thrive, even after you've wiped up the visible water.

You need a professional inspection. The priority is to identify and repair the AC drain line or condensation pan leak—this is the source stopping the problem from recurring. Then, the affected building materials in the closet must be assessed. Drywall, insulation, and the back of the wardrobe likely harbour hidden mould that you cannot properly address with surface cleaning alone. Disturbing it incorrectly can spread spores throughout your apartment.

While not a medical emergency, it is an indoor air quality emergency that should be addressed within days, especially for anyone with allergies or respiratory sensitivities. A proper remediation process involves containment of the area, safe removal of contaminated porous materials, and HEPA vacuuming, followed by verification that the humidity level and spore count have returned to a normal range. For a situation of this scale with visible growth on personal items, a professional assessment is the only way to ensure it is resolved completely and safely.
