Black mold in closet: DIY vinegar or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these black speckles in the corners. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and my wife is worried it’s affecting our clothes. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar solution from Spinneys, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That black speckling is a classic sign of a mold issue, and your timing makes perfect sense given Dubai's recent humidity spike. The outside wall location suggests it's likely due to condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot, humid exterior, a very common issue here.

For a small, surface-level area (less than one square meter), a thorough DIY approach can be effective. Use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and then address the moisture source. This is often inadequate ventilation; leaving the closet doors ajar and running a small dehumidifier or fan in the room can help.

However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall, insulation, or the back of the shelves, or if it returns quickly after cleaning, the problem is systemic and requires professional remediation. This is especially true if anyone in the household has allergies or respiratory sensitivities. Proper remediation involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and most importantly, identifying and rectifying the precise moisture source to prevent recurrence. A professional inspection can determine the extent and recommend the correct course of action.
