Can I clean closet mold myself or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom’s walk-in closet has had a really damp, earthy smell for a couple of months now, and I finally pulled everything out to investigate. I found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate spreading on the back wall where it meets the ceiling. We keep the AC running, but it seems like the humidity is just getting trapped in there. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

A patch the size of a dinner plate indicates a significant moisture issue, and DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall but does not kill the mold roots or address the underlying humidity problem. The damp, earthy smell confirms active growth.

In Dubai's climate, this is likely due to a combination of high ambient humidity and a cold spot where the wall meets the AC-cooled ceiling, causing constant condensation. Simply wiping the surface will not prevent rapid regrowth. For a patch this large, professional assessment is advised to identify the moisture source, contain the spores during removal, and properly dispose of contaminated materials like drywall or insulation.

A reputable service will use HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments specifically designed for porous surfaces, not bleach. They should also diagnose the condensation issue, which may require improving closet ventilation or adjusting AC flow. Verifiable before-and-after testing from an accredited lab is the only way to confirm the mold and its allergens have been properly addressed. For a space storing clothes, this is a health investment.
