Is bathroom ceiling mold dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I just found black spots growing on the ceiling above the shower in our master bathroom. It’s been extra humid the last few weeks and I think the exhaust fan isn't strong enough. Is this the dangerous kind of mold and who should I call to get it properly tested and removed?

Bathroom ceiling mold can be a respiratory irritant, which may explain your children's increased coughing. The high humidity we experience in Dubai creates an ideal environment for mold growth, especially in bathrooms with inadequate ventilation. While not all black mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys (the "dangerous" kind), many common types like Cladosporium and Aspergillus can cause allergy-like symptoms, particularly in children.

The combination of persistent humidity and a weak exhaust fan allows condensation to form, providing the constant moisture mold needs. For a small patch (less than one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but always wear a mask and gloves. However, since the mold is on the ceiling and you're concerned about health effects, a professional assessment is wise.

In Dubai, look for a certified mold inspector who can properly sample the mold for lab identification. This is the only way to determine the species and potential risk level. They will also identify the root cause—likely the insufficient ventilation—and recommend remediation. Remediation involves safely containing and removing the contaminated material, not just wiping the surface, to prevent spores from spreading. For lasting results, you must address the moisture source by repairing or upgrading the exhaust fan to one rated for our climate.
