Black mold in closet: remove myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been extra humid lately. I’m worried this is making my allergies worse. What’s the best way to get rid of it for good here in Dubai, and should I call the building management first?

Given the location on an exterior wall during a humid period, this is almost certainly condensation-related mold, a very common issue in Dubai. The wall is likely colder than the room's dew point, causing moisture to accumulate and feed mold growth.

For a small, contained area, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces. The critical step is to address the moisture source. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan and use a dehumidifier or desiccant bags in the closet to keep humidity below 60%.

You should also inform your building management. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, they are responsible for the building's envelope and structural integrity. The mold could indicate a thermal break or insulation issue within the wall that requires their attention to prevent a recurring problem.

If the mold covers more than one square meter, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the condensation source and air sampling to identify the mold type, which is important if your allergies are being aggravated. For persistent issues, this diagnostic approach is more effective than repeated surface cleaning.
