Could bedroom mold be causing our health issues?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed black speckles spreading in the corner of our bedroom closet, right against the exterior wall. Since the heavy rains in January, the room has felt damp and my husband has developed a persistent cough and itchy eyes that seem to get worse at night. Is this likely connected to the mold and what specific health risks should we be aware of?

Based on your description, yes, the mold is very likely connected to the health issues. The dampness following Dubai's heavy rain created ideal conditions for mold growth, especially on exterior walls which can trap condensation. The symptoms you describe—persistent cough, itchy eyes worsening at night in that room—are classic indicators of mold exposure.

The primary health risks from this type of indoor mold are allergic reactions and respiratory irritation. Inhaling the microscopic spores can cause sinus congestion, coughing, wheezing, and eye or throat irritation. Individuals with existing asthma or allergies often experience a significant worsening of their symptoms. Prolonged exposure in a confined space like a bedroom can lead to more persistent issues.

In the UAE climate, this is a common problem. Year-round AC use can create cold surfaces where moisture condenses, particularly on exterior walls, leading to hidden mold growth behind closets or furniture. The high humidity, especially after rain, provides the constant moisture mold needs to thrive.

You should arrange for a professional inspection. The inspector will identify the moisture source—likely a condensation issue or minor water ingress from the rains—and assess the extent of the growth, which is often more widespread behind surfaces. For health safety and an accurate remediation plan, a lab test to identify the mold species is recommended. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and exacerbate the problem. The root cause, the moisture, must be fixed first.
