Mold from AC leak: remove myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’ve found black, fuzzy mold spreading on the back of the wardrobe. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat for weeks and I’m worried it’s connected. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself, or should I just call a professional company right away?

For the mold on your wardrobe, you can attempt a careful cleanup yourself if the affected area is small—smaller than a square meter and only on a non-porous surface. Wearing an N95 mask and gloves, clean with a diluted detergent solution. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the root cause.

Given the AC has been leaking for months, the real concern is the extensive hidden mold growth likely inside the AC unit and its ducts, and potentially inside the wall cavity behind the wardrobe. Your persistent symptoms strongly suggest a significant airborne spore count, which a surface clean won't resolve. In Dubai's climate, continuous AC operation creates constant condensation, turning a small leak into a major moisture source that fuels mold.

A professional remediation company is strongly advised. They will first conduct an inspection, often using a borescope to see inside walls and ducts, to identify the full extent of contamination. The process involves containment to prevent spores from spreading, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of all affected areas, including the AC system itself. They should provide before-and-after lab air quality tests to verify the spore count has been returned to safe levels. This is the only way to ensure the problem is fully solved and your health symptoms can subside.
