How to permanently remove mold and prevent villa dampness?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp lately, especially on the lower part of the walls behind the furniture. We just pulled the dresser away and found a patch of black mold, which is really worrying as my husband has started sneezing a lot in the morning. I run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help the humidity.
What's the most effective way to get rid of this existing mold for good and what can we do to stop the dampness from coming back, specifically in a villa here?

For the existing mold, first identify and fix the moisture source. In Jumeirah villas, this is often condensation from AC supply ducts running through unconditioned attic spaces or a slight leak from the chilled water system. The dampness behind furniture is a classic sign of condensation on cold walls. Wipe the visible mold with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Do not simply paint over it.
To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity. Running the AC constantly without proper ventilation can sometimes trap moist air. Ensure your AC unit is correctly sized and functioning, as an overworked unit may not dehumidify effectively. Increase air circulation behind furniture by leaving a few inches of space between the wall and your dresser. A standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom can provide a significant and measurable reduction in ambient moisture, especially during the more humid winter months. For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They can perform a thermographic scan to pinpoint hidden cold spots causing condensation and test the mold to identify the species, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. This is particularly important given your husband's reaction. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and proper remediation follows standards like the IICRC S520 to ensure it is addressed at the source, not just the surface. |
