Bathroom ceiling mold: DIY fix or hire a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our villa in Springs for 2 years and just noticed the paint on the bathroom ceiling is bubbling and there's black speckled mold in the corners. It's the ensuite bathroom and we use the hot shower a lot, so I know ventilation is probably the issue. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it came right back. Is this a job for a professional cleaner or do I need a full-on contractor, and roughly how much should I expect to pay to get this properly fixed in Dubai?

Bathroom ceiling mold in Dubai villas is extremely common due to the high humidity and condensation from hot showers. If wiping with vinegar only provided a temporary fix, the mold has likely penetrated the paint and is growing in the ceiling board itself.
For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach with proper PPE and a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner can work if you immediately address the moisture source. However, paint bubbling indicates water retention in the substrate, which requires more than cleaning. The porous gypsum board acts like a sponge, and the mold roots (hyphae) grow deep within it. Scrubbing the surface leaves the root structure intact, guaranteeing rapid regrowth. In this case, the repair is a two-step process. A mold remediation professional should first be engaged to assess the extent of the damage behind the paint and safely remove any compromised ceiling material, containing the spores to prevent spreading. They will identify and treat the root cause, which is almost always inadequate ventilation and condensation buildup. Afterwards, a contractor is needed to replace the ceiling board, apply a mold-resistant primer (like a fungicidal coating), and repaint. The total cost is driven by the square footage of affected area and the complexity of the repair. For a standard ensuite bathroom ceiling, expect the project to be a significant investment, as it encompasses both specialized microbial removal and construction work. Always request a detailed assessment and quotation that breaks down the diagnostic, remediation, and reconstruction phases separately. |
