Black mold on interior wall: clean myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. The weird thing is, the wall feels slightly damp even though it's an interior wall. I’m wondering if this is something I can just clean with bleach myself, or if I need to call a professional to find the source of the moisture?

The dampness on an interior wall is the critical issue, not the visible mold. In Dubai's high humidity, this typically indicates a hidden problem like a slow pipe leak, condensation from an AC duct within the wall, or moisture wicking up from the slab. The mold is just a symptom.
Cleaning the surface with a bleach solution may remove the stain but will not stop it from returning. You must identify and resolve the moisture source, which is rarely a DIY task. For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly advised. A certified inspector will use tools like a moisture meter and thermal imaging camera to locate the exact source of the dampness without destructive probing. This is essential, as the leak could be from plumbing in a neighboring bathroom or an improperly insulated AC supply line causing persistent condensation inside the wall cavity. Addressing the root cause is the only permanent solution. Once the moisture issue is fixed and the area is thoroughly dried, the mold remediation—proper containment, removal, and cleaning of affected materials—can be completed effectively. For health safety, especially with porous materials like drywall and stored fabrics, this process often requires professional equipment to prevent spore dispersal throughout your home. |
