urgent to clean ac mold w/ toddler at home?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be constantly damp and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold around the main air vent in the living room. This has probably been building up over the humid summer. My throat feels a bit scratchy and I’m worried about my toddler’s health. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and should I be running the AC in the meantime or will that just spread the spores?

That situation warrants prompt attention, especially with a toddler at home. The scratchy throat is a common reaction to mold spores, and children are more vulnerable to respiratory irritants. You should have the system professionally inspected and cleaned.

In Dubai's climate, constant AC use creates significant condensation, which is a primary cause of this mold buildup. Running the AC will circulate the spores, so it's best to turn it off until the vent area can be addressed. For immediate relief, use a standalone fan for air circulation and try to increase ventilation in the room by opening windows if outdoor humidity is low.

A proper remediation involves more than wiping the visible patch. The entire duct leading from that vent needs inspection, as the inner lining is likely colonized. Reputable providers use HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial coatings to treat the contamination and can provide before-and-after testing to verify the results. For a case involving visible growth and health symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to determine the full scope.
