Found black mold behind sofa; clean it or hire professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for a couple of weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled our large sofa away from the wall in the living room of our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold, probably from a slow AC leak during the humid summer. We’ve been breathing this in for who knows how long. Is it enough to just clean it myself with bleach, or do we need to get a professional mold inspection to make sure it's all gone and safe?

Found black mold in your villa, particularly with ongoing health symptoms, requires a professional inspection. The visible patch is often just a fraction of the total growth; the main colony thrives inside the wall cavity, feeding on the damp gypsum board. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's internal damage and the true extent of contamination.
Cleaning the surface with bleach is not recommended. It only bleaches the visible colour and does not kill the root structure. More importantly, aggressive scrubbing can aerosolize a massive amount of spores and mycotoxins, significantly worsening your family's exposure and respiratory issues. Given the Jumeirah climate with high humidity and year-round AC use, the leak likely created an ideal environment for extensive hidden growth. With children experiencing persistent coughing, identifying the exact mold species through lab analysis of a properly collected sample is critical to understanding the health risk. A professional remediation plan will include containment, safe removal of contaminated materials like drywall, and HEPA filtration to capture spores, not just surface cleaning. For a situation of this severity, a full assessment is the necessary first step to ensure your home is truly safe. |
