How do I stop AC mold from ruining my closet?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve found black spots spreading on the back wall of my winter clothes. I’m in a Jumeirah villa and I’m terrified it’s going to ruin everything in there, especially with this humidity. What’s the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

Stop the leak first. This is a moisture problem, not just a cleaning one. Turn off the AC unit, place a bucket to catch water, and contact an HVAC technician to repair the condensation drain line, which is the most common cause of leaks in UAE villas.

For the mold, carefully remove the affected clothing and isolate it in plastic bags to prevent spores from spreading. For small areas of mold on a hard wall, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be effective. However, given the porous nature of wall material and fabric, and the potential for hidden growth inside the AC unit or wall cavity, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent.

To prevent recurrence, ensure the repaired AC unit is maintaining a consistent temperature, as frequent on/off cycling increases condensation. Consider installing a standalone dehumidifier in the closet space, as Dubai's high ambient humidity is the primary driver of mold growth. Keep the closet door ajar to improve air circulation. For long-term peace of mind, a professional duct cleaning and anti-microbial treatment of the AC system can help reduce spore levels.
