Can we clean the mold ourselves or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has a persistent dampness problem in the master bedroom closet, especially on the outer wall. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black and greenish mold growing on the back wall and on a few leather bags stored inside. My husband has started getting a stuffy nose every morning. Is this something we can safely clean with vinegar ourselves, or do we need to call in a professional mold remediation company to assess it?

A persistent dampness issue with visible mold growth on an outer wall in a Jumeirah villa, coupled with health symptoms, should be professionally assessed. The combination of an exterior wall (a potential source of water intrusion) and symptoms like a stuffy nose indicates this is likely beyond a simple surface cleaning job.

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and constant AC use create significant condensation risks. The mold growing on both the wall and your personal items, like leather bags, suggests elevated spore levels in the enclosed closet space. Cleaning it yourself with vinegar is a temporary measure that often fails to address the root cause, which could be a hidden leak, insufficient insulation causing condensation, or compromised waterproofing in the wall cavity. The vinegar will only remove the visible stain, not the underlying colony or the moisture problem.

For a situation like this, the recommended first step is a professional inspection to identify the moisture source. A reputable inspector will use tools like moisture meters and thermal cameras to assess the wall and can take air or surface samples for lab analysis to determine the mold type. This is crucial for understanding the health risk and planning an effective remediation. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials like the affected drywall, addressing the water issue, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Once the root cause is fixed and the area is properly treated, you can then safely clean remaining surfaces on your belongings.
