Urgent: Is this shower mold an immediate health risk?« Back to Previous Page

Our ensuite bathroom in our Mirdif villa has had this damp, earthy smell for the last couple of months that I just can't get rid of. I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a bunch of black and greenish speckles underneath it. My main concern is, with the humidity rising again, is this something I need to call a professional to deal with immediately this weekend, or can it wait a few weeks?

Black and green speckles beneath silicone sealant, accompanied by a persistent earthy smell, indicate active mold growth. The immediate health risk depends on the individual; for most, it causes irritation like sneezing or congestion, but for infants, elderly, or those with asthma or compromised immunity, it can pose a more significant respiratory concern.

Given Dubai's rising humidity, this is a problem that will only worsen. The mold you see is likely just the surface growth; the main colony is hidden behind the tiles or in the wall, feeding on the moisture from shower condensation. While not necessarily a weekend emergency if no one is experiencing acute symptoms, it should be addressed within the next few weeks to prevent further spread.

Do not attempt to simply bleach the visible spots, as this will not address the root problem. The contaminated silicone must be completely removed, the area behind it professionally cleaned and dried, and new sealant applied. For a villa in Mirdif, given the extent you describe, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the hidden damage and properly remediate it to prevent recurrence. Look for a provider that uses moisture meters and can explain their process for containment and removal.
