Can we clean black mold ourselves with a baby nearby?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It seems to have appeared since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago. My husband thinks we can just wipe it off with bleach, but I'm worried it's more serious, especially with our baby sleeping in the next room.
Is this something we can safely clean ourselves, or should we call a professional company to deal with it?

With a baby nearby, this requires careful consideration. The humid Dubai climate, particularly during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in enclosed spaces like closets.
For a small, isolated patch (under one square foot), self-cleaning can be safe if done correctly. The key is containment and protection. The baby and all family members should be out of the room during the process. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, not just bleach, which only surface-bleaches and doesn't kill the roots. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan afterward and fix the moisture source—this is often condensation from an AC duct or a leak. However, given its location behind items, it suggests a persistent humidity issue. If the mold returns after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you notice a musty smell in the room, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the exact moisture source and species of mold, which is critical for assessing risk to infant respiratory health. In many Dubai villas, this is linked to AC condensate drain issues or inadequate ventilation, problems that require more than just wiping to resolve permanently. |
