Can I treat shower mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black spots forming in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's in the corner that doesn't get much airflow, and the musty smell is really strong, especially after my morning shower. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

It depends on the extent and type of mold. For a small, surface-level patch on non-porous tile grout, a DIY approach can be effective. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold in poorly ventilated bathrooms like yours.

Start by scrubbing the area with a stiff brush and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner. After treatment, improving airflow is critical; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and consider a dehumidifier. The musty smell indicates a deeper issue, as the odor is from microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by active colonies. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, appears fuzzy, or has penetrated porous materials like drywall or the ceiling, professional assessment is needed. A lab test can identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol, especially if it's a type like Aspergillus that can cause more significant irritation.
