How to prevent mold in my Jumeirah closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started getting small black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I know the humidity has been crazy high lately, but the dehumidifier is running constantly in the room itself. What's the best way to treat the items and completely prevent this from happening again inside the closet itself?

Mold in closets on exterior villa walls is extremely common in Jumeirah due to the high ambient humidity and temperature differences creating condensation inside the wall cavity. The closet acts as a cold trap, and your leather items provide an organic food source.

First, address the contaminated items. For leather goods with visible growth, wipe them down with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water. Test on a small, inconspicuous area first. After treating, allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated, low-humidity area outside of the closet before considering storage again.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the microenvironment. A dehumidifier in the room helps, but the enclosed closet likely has stagnant, humid air. Install a battery-operated dehumidifier unit or moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) inside the closet itself. Ensure there is a small air gap between the exterior wall and your stored items; avoid pushing bags and shoes directly against the cold surface. Leaving the closet door ajar for a few hours each day can significantly improve air circulation and prevent moisture buildup.

For a permanent solution, the root cause is often insufficient insulation or a thermal bridge in the villa's exterior wall. An infrared thermal imaging inspection can identify the exact cold spots causing condensation. Remediation usually involves improving insulation or installing a vapor barrier, which are common practices for villa maintenance in the UAE climate. If the problem persists despite these measures, a professional assessment is recommended to rule out a hidden leak or more significant structural issue.
