Can I remove small bedroom mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from black mold growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to clean, it's a dark patch about the size of a dinner plate on the wall. I'm worried about the health risks but also don't want to get ripped off by a company for a small job. For a patch this size in a bedroom, is this something I can handle myself with bleach, or should I absolutely call a professional in Dubai, and what’s a reasonable cost range to expect for remediation?

For a patch the size of a dinner plate, you can attempt to clean it yourself if the underlying wall is sound and there's no moisture damage. However, given your children's symptoms and the UAE's high humidity that promotes mold growth, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source and ensure it's properly resolved to prevent recurrence.

DIY cleaning requires more than bleach, which can actually feed mold by leaving moisture behind. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner is more effective. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly, but the critical step is identifying and fixing the moisture issue—likely condensation from your AC unit or a hidden leak behind the wall. Simply cleaning the visible growth will not stop it from returning if the dampness remains.

In Dubai, the cost for professional remediation on a job this size is typically not exorbitant. You are paying for their expertise in moisture detection, proper containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the bedroom, and the use of industrial-grade HEPA filtration equipment. Reputable companies will provide a detailed assessment and quote before any work begins. Always ask for before-and-after documentation or lab test results to verify the cleanup's effectiveness. For a health-related concern with visible symptoms, the investment in a professional diagnosis is the safest course.
