Should we worry about black mold in our AC vents?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for the past couple of months, and we’ve both had constant stuffy noses and headaches since it started. I just pulled the filter out and found black spots all over the back of it and in the vents. Should we be worried about this affecting our health, and what’s the best way to get our landlord to handle this properly?

The black spots in your AC are very likely mold, and given your symptoms, you should address this promptly. The damp smell, headaches, and congestion are common reactions to mold exposure, as the AC unit continuously circulates contaminated air throughout the room. In Dubai's climate, the constant cycling between extreme outdoor heat and cold, damp AC interiors creates ideal conditions for mold growth due to condensation.
For your health and to properly resolve this, you need a professional inspection. A visual check isn't enough; the mold you see is often just the tip of the iceberg, with significant growth inside the ductwork and cooling coils. A proper assessment involves air and surface sampling to be analyzed by a microbiology lab to identify the mold species and concentration, which dictates the required remediation scope. To get your landlord to act, formally notify them in writing (email is best) detailing your health symptoms and the visible mold discovery. Reference Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety Department regulations, which hold property owners responsible for maintaining habitable and healthy living conditions, which includes functional, clean AC systems. Clearly state that a specialist assessment is required. Most reputable landlords will respond to a documented, professional request highlighting a potential health code violation. If they are unresponsive, you can escalate the matter by filing a complaint with the Rental Dispute Center (RDC). Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aggravate the spores and worsen air quality without addressing the root moisture problem. |
