Should I report black mold in my humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Al Barsha, and the room always feels more humid than the rest of the house. What's the best way to get rid of this safely, and is this something I should report to my landlord immediately?

Yes, you should report this to your landlord immediately. Under Dubai rental law (RERA), landlords are responsible for maintaining the property's structure, which includes resolving issues like dampness and mold that result from structural defects. The humidity you describe, combined with the location on an external wall, strongly suggests a leak or significant thermal bridging/condensation issue that is their responsibility to fix.

For safe removal, do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and only removes surface discoloration, not the root cause. The moisture source must be identified and stopped first. A professional inspection can determine if the issue is a hidden pipe leak, inadequate insulation, or another structural flaw. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold, this is a common but serious issue.

Until it's assessed, keep the closet door open to improve air circulation and consider using a portable dehumidifier in the room. The landlord should arrange for a proper remediation that includes fixing the moisture intrusion, removing affected materials if necessary, and cleaning with specialized antimicrobial agents. A post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly resolved and safe.
