is it safe to clean black bathroom mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately, and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled back the vinyl flooring in the corner of our master bathroom and found a bunch of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath. The bathroom doesn’t have a window and the exhaust fan is weak, so I guess the humidity from our showers just gets trapped. Is it safe for me to clean this myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Black bathroom mold under flooring often signals a deeper moisture issue that simple cleaning won't resolve. In Dubai's high humidity, the lack of ventilation in your windowless bathroom creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive, not just on surfaces but within walls and subfloors.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself. However, the mold you found is not surface-level; it's under the vinyl, indicating significant trapped moisture and potential structural damage. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like wood or concrete subfloors—it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. It also poses respiratory risks in an enclosed space, especially with children present.

The persistent cough you describe is a common reaction to mold spore exposure. DIY attempts to pull up the flooring will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, potentially contaminating your entire home and exacerbating respiratory issues.

A professional assessment is strongly recommended here. They will identify the full extent of the moisture intrusion, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, and use HEPA filtration during remediation. The critical step is identifying and fixing the source of the humidity—likely requiring ventilation upgrades to meet Dubai building standards for windowless wet areas. Without solving the moisture problem, the mold will return.
