How to prevent closet mold in Dubai's humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting a few small patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes we store in there. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I’m worried the AC isn’t drying that enclosed space enough. What’s the most effective way to prevent this from spreading and recurring in our Dubai home without having to run a dehumidifier 24/7?

The most effective approach combines moisture control, improved air circulation, and temperature management. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold in enclosed spaces like closets on external walls, which can be cooler and prone to condensation.

First, address the immediate issue. Wipe the mold off the leather goods with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated leather cleaner, then dry them thoroughly in a well-ventilated area before returning them. For the closet interior, clean the surfaces with a mixture of water and detergent, then wipe with a diluted vinegar solution to discourage regrowth.

To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation. This is crucial. Leave the closet doors open for several hours each day to allow conditioned air from the room to flow through. Ensure that bedroom furniture is not blocking the AC supply vent, as restricted airflow is a common cause. If the closet is large, a small battery-operated moisture absorber can help.

Your AC is your primary dehumidifier. Ensure it is set to a consistently cool temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, as this helps the unit remove more moisture from the air. Check that the AC unit is draining properly; a clogged condensate drain line will drastically reduce its dehumidifying capacity.

For a persistent problem on an external wall, the issue may be minor thermal bridging or condensation within the wall itself. A professional inspection can identify if this is the case and recommend targeted solutions, such as improving the seal around the closet or adding insulation, which is often more effective than constant dehumidifier use.
