Found black mold from AC leak, DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. I think it might be from a small AC leak in the vent above it. The room has felt more humid than usual since the weather got hotter and we cranked the AC non-stop. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call the building management first for an AC repair?

First, address the source of moisture immediately. The AC leak must be fixed to stop the mold from returning. In Dubai's high humidity, a constantly running AC can cause significant condensation if there's a drainage issue.

For a small patch, you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area and let it dry completely. However, this only addresses the visible growth.

You should notify building management about the AC leak, as they are typically responsible for the central system and ductwork repairs. For the mold, consider that surface cleaning doesn't address potential spores in the air or hidden within the wall if the leak has been ongoing.

Given the location in a closet and the persistent humidity you've felt, a professional inspection is often warranted to assess the full extent. They can identify the mold species and check for hidden moisture, which is common here when condensate drain lines clog. DIY is a temporary fix; resolving the root cause is essential to prevent recurrence.
