Can I remove closet ceiling mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our master bedroom closet has these black splotchy patches that we didn't notice until we were doing our deep clean before Eid. It's been there for a while, I think, because the humidity has been so high lately and the closet is on an exterior wall. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar and bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai to check it out properly?

That black splotchy pattern on your closet ceiling is a classic sign of mold growth, almost certainly fueled by Dubai's high humidity and condensation on that exterior wall. Whether you can handle this yourself depends entirely on the scale and cause.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach may work. Use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only removes surface discoloration and doesn't kill the roots. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, this is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. You must identify and address the source—this is often condensation from AC ducts running through the space, a small roof leak, or inadequate insulation in the exterior wall.

In most cases here, especially with recurring growth or a larger affected area, a professional assessment is the wiser choice. We see this constantly in Dubai villas. A proper inspection identifies the exact mold species and, more critically, uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the hidden water source that you cannot see. Remediation then focuses on fixing that leak or condensation problem first, before safely containing and removing the mold to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home. Without addressing the root cause, the mold will almost certainly return, making any DIY effort a wasted one.
