Is black mold causing our persistent coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past couple of weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs and found a bunch of our jackets and shoes covered in black spots. The room has felt damp ever since the heavy rains in January. Could this mold be making my family sick and what’s the fastest way to deal with it properly?

Black mold, particularly Stachybotrys chartarum, is known to produce mycotoxins that can cause respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, and other allergy-like symptoms, especially in children and those with compromised immune systems. Given the damp storage conditions you've described since the January rains, it is very plausible the mold is a contributing factor to your family's health issues.

The UAE's high humidity and our reliance on enclosed, air-conditioned spaces can create pockets of dampness where mold thrives, particularly in poorly ventilated storage areas. The fastest and safest initial step is to isolate the contamination. Seal the moldy items in plastic bags and remove them from the living area immediately to prevent further spore dispersal. Do not attempt to clean them yourself, as improper handling can aerosolize the spores.

For the affected cupboard, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture can be used on hard, non-porous surfaces, but this only addresses surface growth you can see. The dampness indicates a potential moisture problem in the wall or floor that needs to be identified and resolved to prevent recurrence.

Given the health symptoms and the extent of the contamination, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the moisture source, assess the full extent of the growth (which is often hidden within walls or under flooring), and perform air quality testing to quantify spore levels. Remediation then involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to clean the air, and safely removing contaminated materials. Verifiable before-and-after lab results are the only way to confirm the problem has been properly resolved.
