Black fuzzy mold in closet: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outer wall has had this damp, earthy smell for a couple of months now, and I finally pulled everything out to find a bunch of black fuzzy spots in the corner. I wiped it down with vinegar, but it came back worse after just a week. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or is it time to call in a professional?

The return of black fuzzy mold after a vinegar cleaning is a clear sign the issue is more than surface-level. Vinegar is a mild acid that can kill some surface mold but cannot address the underlying moisture source or penetrate porous materials where roots (hyphae) thrive.

In Dubai's climate, this is almost certainly due to condensation from your air conditioning. The outer wall is the coldest surface in the room, causing humid air to condense inside the wall or on its interior surface, creating a perpetual damp environment perfect for mold. Simply wiping the visible growth does nothing to stop this process.

For a recurring problem of this nature, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The goal is not just to clean what you see but to identify and rectify the hidden cause. A proper assessment will determine if there's insufficient insulation in the wall, a negative pressure issue pulling humid air in, or a breach in the building envelope.

Attempting a stronger DIY cleaner like bleach is not recommended. It may bleach the mold white but leaves the roots alive, and its fumes can be hazardous in an enclosed space. More importantly, you risk disturbing a significant colony, potentially releasing a high concentration of spores into your bedroom air.

A certified mold inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact condensation source and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which informs the correct remediation protocol. Solving this requires fixing the moisture problem first, then performing the remediation.
