Should we treat black mold in Dubai urgently or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. The weird thing is it’s only appeared since the weather got really humid last month. My husband thinks it’s no big deal, but I’m worried it’s a sign of a bigger problem. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated here in Dubai, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

That black patch is a sign of moisture intrusion, and in Dubai's climate, it should be addressed promptly. The recent high humidity is the catalyst, but the mold is growing because there is a persistent moisture source, likely from condensation within the wall or a minor leak. Bleach is not recommended; it only removes surface discoloration and can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture without addressing the root cause or the hyphae (roots) growing deeper.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can carefully clean it yourself with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, since it's on an exterior wall and appeared due to weather, a DIY approach is risky. The visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg, and the underlying moisture issue could be spreading mold inside the wall cavity. This is a common problem here due to the constant battle between air-conditioned interiors and humid exteriors, leading to condensation within building envelopes.

A professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the exact moisture source—whether it's a thermal bridge, leaking pipe, or compromised waterproofing. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's interior without unnecessary damage. Treating it urgently prevents further structural damage and potential health effects from prolonged spore exposure, especially since the bedroom is a high-occupancy area. The goal is to solve the water problem first, then safely remove the contamination.
