DIY black mold removal or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that’s been slowly spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because it's on the wall that faces the outside and I think all the recent humidity has made it worse. I’m worried about their health but also don’t want to call the building management and deal with a big repair if it’s something I can handle myself with bleach.
Is this a DIY cleanup job or do I absolutely need to get professionals involved?

Black mold in a Dubai bedroom closet is a health concern, especially with children coughing. The wall facing outside is a classic trouble spot where condensation forms from the extreme temperature differential between the AC-cooled interior and the hot, humid exterior air. Bleach is not recommended; it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the moisture problem or kill the mold roots penetrating porous materials like drywall.
For a small patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach is possible. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub with detergent and water, not bleach. However, if the mold returns—which it often does in our climate—or if the area is larger, the wall is likely compromised. The mold has probably spread inside the wall cavity, which you cannot effectively clean yourself. Given the persistent humidity and the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's interior damage. Remediation often involves removing and replacing the affected drywall and insulation to get to the root cause. For rental properties, building management is typically responsible for structural repairs, but a third-party lab report documenting the mold species and extent can be necessary to compel action. |
