AC leak causing mold and health issues: should I worry?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for the past couple of months, and now I've started noticing black spots along the edge of the wall behind the wardrobe. I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a dry cough that goes away a few hours after I leave for work. Is this likely a mold issue and should I be worried about these symptoms?

Yes, your symptoms and the black spots are almost certainly connected to a mold issue from the AC leak. In Dubai's climate, constant AC use creates significant condensation, and any leak provides the persistent moisture mold needs to grow. The wall behind the wardrobe is a classic problem area where stagnant, humid air gets trapped.

Waking up with a stuffy nose and dry cough that resolves when you leave the room is a very common reaction to mold exposure, typically from inhaling spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs). It's your body's inflammatory response to the irritants. While this is not typically a severe medical emergency for healthy adults, prolonged exposure can worsen allergies and asthma over time.

You should address this promptly. For a case with visible growth and health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent behind the wall and within the AC unit itself, as the internal drip pan could also be contaminated. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and remediation should follow standards to properly contain and remove the affected materials, not just wipe the surface.

Start by having the AC leak repaired immediately to stop the moisture source. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and only removes surface discoloration, not the root colony. A proper remediation will involve identifying the moisture source, containing the area, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, and HEPA vacuuming to clear spores.
