How to permanently stop bathroom mold without re-grouting?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but now I’m seeing black spots growing in the grout between the tiles on the shower wall. I run the exhaust fan during my showers, but the humidity just doesn't seem to go away, especially after the kids take their long, hot baths. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold for good without having to re-grout the entire shower?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is primarily a humidity issue, exacerbated by our climate. The key to a permanent solution is not just cleaning but systematically reducing the moisture the mold needs to grow.
Start by confirming the exhaust fan is powerful enough; many installed units are undersized. It should be able to hold a piece of toilet paper against the vent grill when running. Run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down all wet surfaces—tiles, glass, walls—with a squeegee immediately after use. This simple step removes the majority of the standing water that soaks into grout. For the existing black spots, apply a dedicated EPA-approved mold remover or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub with a stiff brush. Never use bleach, as it only bleaches the surface and does not kill the roots penetrating the porous grout. Once clean and dry, seal the grout lines with a high-quality, penetrating grout sealer. This creates a waterproof barrier, making it much harder for moisture to penetrate. Reapply this sealer every six to twelve months, as it wears down with cleaning. If the mold returns quickly or covers a large area (over one square meter), or if you suspect it's behind the tiles, a professional inspection is warranted. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and identify if the issue is with the waterproofing membrane itself, which would require more extensive remediation. In many older Dubai apartments, inadequate ventilation is the root cause that needs addressing. |
