Black mold found in villa, DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has a persistent dampness issue from the humidity. I finally pulled out the guest room wardrobe yesterday and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold all over the back wall. It’s been there for a while, probably since the last rainy season. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company, and what’s the typical cost range for a job like that in Dubai?

That's a significant find, and a very common issue in Dubai villas due to the high humidity and condensation that builds up behind furniture on cold exterior walls. The term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins, but many other black-colored molds are more common and typically cause allergy-like symptoms.
For a large, established patch, DIY with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall and concrete; it doesn't kill the roots. It also adds moisture, which can actually feed the mold again. Scrubbing can release a massive amount of spores into your home's air. This requires professional remediation. The wall cavity likely has extensive growth you can't see. A proper protocol involves isolating the area with containment barriers, using HEPA air scrubbers to filter spores, safely removing and bagging contaminated porous materials like drywall and insulation, and using specialized biocides and sanding methods on non-porous surfaces. The goal is to remove the mold, not just kill it. Cost is variable and depends entirely on the square footage of contamination and the extent of demolition required. For a section behind a wardrobe, you're likely looking at a localized project. Reputable companies provide a detailed assessment and quote only after an on-site inspection, which is crucial. Always request that they provide before-and-after lab air or surface sample results to verify the cleanup's effectiveness—this is the key to ensuring the job is done correctly, not just cosmetically cleaned. |
