Should we stay in moldy apartment or go to hotel?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and sneezing non-stop for the past month, and I just found a big patch of black and green fuzzy mold behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah apartment. It must have been growing there since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I'm really worried about their health and want to get it sorted immediately. Is it safe for us to stay in the apartment while we get this treated, or should I take the kids to a hotel?

With the mold visible and your children showing symptoms, you should strongly consider relocating them until the area is professionally assessed and contained. The primary risk is airborne spore dispersal during any cleaning attempt, which could significantly worsen their respiratory irritation.

For a patch the size you describe behind furniture, the source moisture has likely been present for some time. In Dubai's climate, this often stems from condensation buildup on cold exterior walls (common in older Jumeirah buildings) or a slow, hidden leak. Disturbing it without proper containment sprays spores throughout the apartment.

A legitimate remediation process involves sealing the area with plastic sheeting, using HEPA-filtered negative air machines to contain spores, and safely removing contaminated materials. Until a certified inspector identifies the mold type and extent of growth, it's impossible to guarantee the air quality is safe for sensitive individuals.

While adults may tolerate temporary exposure, children's developing respiratory systems are more susceptible. Their persistent symptoms are a clear indicator the environment is affecting them. If relocation isn't feasible, ensure the family stays in a well-ventilated room far from the affected area and run HEPA air purifiers continuously until professionals can intervene. The priority is isolating the contamination source and preventing further spore inhalation.
